Australia Itinerary Ideas Starting in Sydney

Sydney is a natural starting point for Australia because it gives you the icons quickly: Opera House, Harbour Bridge, ferries, beaches, restaurants and skyline views. From there, the right itinerary depends on time.

5 days: Sydney and the Blue Mountains

Spend three or four days in Sydney, then add the Blue Mountains. This is the simplest first-time trip if you do not want extra flights.

Best for: first-time visitors, short trips, city plus nature.

7 to 9 days: Sydney and Melbourne

Pair Sydney’s harbour with Melbourne’s food, laneways, galleries and sport. It is the easiest two-city Australia trip and gives you a strong contrast.

Best for: city travellers, food, culture, easy domestic flight planning.

10 to 12 days: Sydney, reef and rainforest

Start in Sydney, then fly north toward Cairns or Port Douglas for the Great Barrier Reef and tropical rainforest.

Best for: iconic Australia, snorkelling, warmer weather, nature.

12 to 14 days: Sydney, Uluru and Melbourne

This is a bigger, more ambitious trip. Sydney gives you the harbour, Uluru gives you the Red Centre, and Melbourne gives you another city personality.

Best for: bucket-list travel, contrast, photography.

14+ days: Sydney, Tasmania and the Outback

With two weeks or more, you can slow down. Add Tasmania for cooler landscapes or the Outback for distance and scale.

Best for: road trips, nature, deeper travel, repeat visitors.

Planning advice

Do not underestimate distance. Australia looks easy on a map until you start adding flights and transfers. Build in slower days. The best itinerary leaves room to actually feel where you are.
